Mentorship is often pictured as advice moving in one direction. The most effective mentors know that guidance starts with listening. Before a young person can receive wisdom, they need to know their questions, fears, humor, and hopes are welcome.

Listening does not mean agreeing with everything. It means slowing down long enough to understand what is underneath the first answer. A teen who feels heard is more likely to consider feedback, accept accountability, and try again after a mistake.

Time 2 Consider encourages mentors to ask better questions: What have you already tried? What do you wish people understood? What choice would move you one step closer to the person you want to become?
